B) Order of Installation
If you ever need to reinstall your STATGRAPHICS system, you need to be
sure to re-install it in the order you received your disks. If you
received your modules before you received a version 2 update, you will
need to re-install in the following sequence:
-Base system version 1.0, 1.1, 1.2 or 1.3
-Any modules with version 1.0 on the label in the order QC, TS, DOE, MV
-Base system version 1.4 OR the 1.4 maintenance release
-Any modules with version 1.4 on the label
*-Version 2.0 update disks
-Any modules with version 2.0 on the label
*-Version 2.1 maintenance release or 2.1 update disks
-Any modules with version 2.1 on the label
* Note - Update disks must installed on top of a version 1 copy to
update and retain your existing modules.

C) Using OLE Effectively
You can use OLE to move STATGRAPHICS Plus text and graphics panes
to other OLE capable software. STATGRAPHICS Plus works only as
an OLE server, which means that you can copy panes from
STATGRAPHICS Plus to other OLE client software, but you cannot copy
OLE objects into STATGRAPHICS Plus. The most common use for this
is to put panes from your statistical analysis into a word
processing package to produce high quality reports with graphics
and text built in.
There are two methods of copying panes with OLE. The first is to
make a static copy of a pane. In this case, the image will be
copied over to the client software and will not be affected by
future changes you make to your analysis in STATGRAPHICS Plus.
The second method is to 'link' the pane you copy. In this case,
you can cause the image in the client software to be updated to
match the current image in STATGRAPHICS Plus.
1) Static images
To statically copy a pane into another software package, first
bring up both STATGRAPHICS Plus and the client software. To copy
a pane from STATGRAPHICS Plus, simply maximize the pane, press
the left mouse button on the pane, drag the image over to your
client software and release the mouse button. Your client
software will have an image of the pane inserted.
If your application doesn't support OLE Drag-and-Drop you can still
copy the image by maximizing the pane and then choosing the
Edit...Copy command from the STATGRAPHICS Plus menu. This will
place the image of the pane into the clipboard where it can be
inserted in your client software by choosing Edit...Paste from
the client software's menu.
Double-clicking on a static image in the client software is called
in-place activation. This will load STATGRAPHICS Plus if it is not
already loaded, and will ask to save any existing StatFolio if
STATGRAPHICS Plus was loaded. It will not be able to edit the
object because the original link was static and did not include
the source StatFolio and analysis information.
2) Dynamic images
To dynamically link a pane into an OLE client, bring up both
STATGRAPHICS Plus and the client software. First, be sure to save
the analysis you want to link to as a StatFolio in STATGRAPHICS
Plus. You cannot link a pane that was not first saved in a
Version 2 StatFolio. Next, maximize the pane you want to copy,
then select Edit...Copy from the STATGRAPHICS plus menu to copy
the pane to the clipboard. Then, in the client software, select
Edit...Paste Special from that package's menu. When you get a
dialog box asking which type of object you want to paste, select
StatFolio Document Object. Also, make sure the Paste Link option
is selected. This will link the pane inserted into the client
software to the STATGRAPHICS Plus analysis you saved.
After an object is dynamically linked, you can update it to reflect
any changes that might have been made in the StatFolio by
double-clicking on the object in the client software.
When you double-click, Windows will look for STATGRAPHICS Plus
and the StatFolio that the object came from and go through
these steps:
- Is STATGRAPHICS Plus running? If not, launch (start) it.
- Is the StatFolio that the object came from loaded? If not,
load it. If you have a different StatFolio loaded, you will
get a message asking if you want to save the current
StatFolio. If you select No or Cancel, the link update
process aborts. You MUST save an existing StatFolio
to edit or update the object, even if the StatFolio is
untitled. This behavior ensures that you do not lose any
work in progress due to an unexpected link update.
- Is the statistical analysis that you copied the pane from
still in the StatFolio? If not, the link update process
aborts.
- Is the pane that you copied still in the analysis? If not,
the link update process aborts.
If the link update process isn't aborted by a missing StatFolio or
for some other reason, then the current pane in STATGRAPHICS Plus
will update the object in the OLE client software. This may
include such changes as changes to the data, scaling changes on
axes or any other updates that were made to the analysis or pane.
Note that when an analysis in a StatFolio is created, it is given
a unique timestamp that is saved as part the OLE object. So if
you create a Simple Regression Analysis using the variables mpg
and weight, you can update the variables used in a link by
changing the variable name in the data input icon on the analysis.
If you create a new analysis, it will have a different timestamp
and not match what you saved in the OLE client, even if you
recreate another Simple Regression Analysis. This allows you to
have two Simple Regression analyses in one StatFolio with
different options or data and not have the OLE client software
get them confused.
Some OLE clients, such as Microsoft Excel, specify a link as
automatic. This means that the client software will regularly
update the link automatically. If you are trying to use
STATGRAPHICS for doing work with StatFolios other than the one
that is linked, you will probably need to change the link to
manual or close the OLE client. If you change to another
StatFolio and then an automatic link is updated, the OLE client
will send a message to STATGRAPHICS to update the link. This
requires loading the linked StatFolio and may cause problems in
the analysis you are using.
If a StatFolio was saved in Version 1, you will need to resave
it in order to use it in a dynamic link. Otherwise, the analysis
will not have the proper link; the StatFolio will load, but the
client software will not be able to find and edit the appropriate
analysis.

D) Installation Problems
1) Network Installation
Installation of SGWIN onto a network requires both read and
write access to the following directories:
WINDOWS
WINDOWS\SYSTEM
SGWIN
In addition, if Windows is run from a server drive, then the
system must have read/write access to the local Windows
directory.
2) Win32s and Windows 3.1 or 3.11
One common STATGRAPHICS Plus for Windows installation
problem is an unsuccessful installation of Microsoft's Win32s
program, an integral part of the STATGRAPHICS Plus for Windows
system under Windows 3.1. The STATGRAPHICS Plus for Windows
Setup program installs the version 1.3a of Win32s on your system
if you are not running Windows 95 or Windows NT. If you cannot
start STATGRAPHICS Plus for Windows under Windows 3.1, try to run
Microsoft's 'Freecell' from the Win32s portion of the setup. If
you can run this Win32s cardgame, then your Win32s program has
probably been correctly installed. However if you cannot run
Freecell, Win32s has not been correctly installed.
Some common error messages associated with Win32s include:
i) Win32s Error- Improper installation. Win32s requires
WIN32S.EXE and WIN32S16.DLL to run. Reinstall WIN32s.
ii) File Copy Operation Failed - Incorrect # of bytes
written to disk.
iii) Source File or Destination Disk may be corrupted, use CHKDSK
Source : B:\W32sys.dl_ Dest : C:\Windows\System\W32sys.dll
iv) Unexpected Dos Error
v) Error: Cannot find file freecell.exe (or one of its
components)...
vi) File Error: Cannot find OLECLI.DLL
vii) One or more system components is out of date, reinstall Win32s
(see item ii below)
These error messages are not all inclusive, however they are the
most common messages reported.
Solutions for an Improper Installation of Win32s:
i) Make sure that paging is enabled (VIRTUAL MEMORY). To
assure that paging is enabled, go to the Windows Control
Panel. Select the 386 Enhanced icon, choose Virtual Memory,
and choose Change. Verify that the drive type is NOT set
to none. The type can be set to either temporary or
permanent. Also verify that you are using the recommended
setting for virtual memory.
ii) If you get a message similar to "at least one system component
is out of date, reinstall Win32s" when attempting to launch
STATGRAPHICS, then there are older versions of some Win32s files
somewhere in your Windows search path. Search all directories
and disks for the following files. You need to have only one
copy of each of these which should be in your Windows\system
directory. It is possible to have multiple copies as long as
the files are all the current version.
Version 2.0 files and the correct dates
compobj.dll 9/6/95
ole2.dll 9/6/95
ole2disk.dll 7/25/95
ole2nls.dll 7/25/95
ole2prox.dll 9/6/95
stdole.tlb 7/25/95
storage.dll 3/2/95
typelib.dll 7/25/95
w32sys.dll 9/6/95
win32s16.dll 9/6/95
winmm16.dll 9/5/95
iii) Check to see if you have a VESA Driver on your system.
Some previous drivers by VESA Drivers and Dell (S3) had
conflicts with various versions of Win32s. The makers of
the boards are aware of the conflicts, and have been
working on drivers which do not conflict. Contact the
driver maker for updated drivers. Until this is possible,
reconfigure your system for the standard VGA driver which
comes with the Windows system.
iv) Run Memmaker
v) Try starting your system with no network drivers if
applicable.
vi) Make sure that SHARE is enabled.
vii) If you have a LaserMaster Winjet controller installed in
your system, it is necessary to disable the unit before
STATGRAPHICS Plus can be installed. The WinSpool driver
conflicts with the install process. Using either the
System Configuration Editor from within Windows, or the edit
feature within DOS, first open the Win.ini file. Comment
out the following lines by placing a semicolon and a space
(; ) in front of the line as per the examples below. The
brackets indicate the sections where you should find the
line.
[Windows]
; device=LM WinJet 1200 PS,LMPS,WinSpool:
[PrinterPorts]
; LM WinJet 1200 PS=LMPS,WinSpool:,15,45
[devices]
; LM Winject 1200 PS=LMPS,WinSpool:
Save and close Win.ini.
Next open System.ini and scroll to the section
[386Enh]
; device=lmharold.386
; device=lmmi.386
; device=lmcap.386
Save and close System.ini
Run the STATGRAPHICS Plus for Windows SETUP program.
Upon completion, open Win.ini and remove the semicolon
and space (; ). Then, open System.ini and remove the
semicolon and space (; ). Restart Windows to have the
changes take effect.
To reinstall the Win32s system, modify your Win32s.ini
file so that the SETUP=1 reads SETUP=0. If you continue to
experience trouble running STATGRAPHICS Plus for Windows after
running the SETUP program again, check the system by running
Freecell from the Win32s installation.
STARTING THE SYSTEM
If you are having difficulty starting the system, the most
likely causes are:
1) You do not have virtual memory enabled.
2) You do not have enough virtual memory enabled. We do not
have a specified requirement for virtual memory, however,
if you have less than 12 Meg of RAM, you will probably want
at least 15 Meg of virtual memory.
3) Win32s is not properly installed. See the Win32s section
above for information on correcting this difficulty.
4) Change the name of your Startup group within Windows. This
will allow you to start Windows without loading other
programs that may be taking away memory.
5) If you are able to start the system but are not able to
access any of the modules, try increasing your virtual
memory.

E) DDE LINKS
If you have difficulty establishing a link, please make sure that
the directory that contains the DDE Server program's .EXE startup
file is found within the PATH statement of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

F) Printing Graphics
When you are printing graphics with STATGRAPHICS Plus, you will
probably want to be sure to use Page Setup on the File menu.
STATGRAPHICS Plus lays the graph out on the page using the
Graphics Scaling percentages in the bottom right corner of the
Page Setup dialog box. STATGRAPHICS Plus normally displays a
graph on the screen in a pane that is shorter than it is wide.
If you then print the same graph in portrait mode, your graph
will be taller than it is wide if the Graphics Scaling fields
are set to 100% and 100%. This may result in some items on the
graph like labels to seem to be out of place. To display the
graph like you see on the screen, you can either change the
Print Setup option to display in Landscape mode and use most of
the page. Or you can change the Vertical Graphics Scaling to
50% to change the relative size on height vs. width to match
the screen better.
Multiple graphs per page; Graphics are always sized to fit the
Graphics Scaling percentages you set in Page Setup. This is
true even when you select Multiple Panes/Page in the Output
section of the Page Setup dialog box. To fit multiple graphs
per page, you will need to select Multiple Panes/Page AND
change the Graphics Scaling percentages so that at least one
dimension is less than 50%. For example, to print 2 graphs on
a page in portrait mode, one on top of the other, select Multiple
Panes/Page and change the Vertical percentage in the Graphics
Scaling section to 50%.
